Coinbase is reportedly in advanced discussions to acquire Deribit, a leading cryptocurrency derivatives exchange, as per a recent report by Bloomberg. Deribit is known as the largest platform for trading Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) options globally. This potential acquisition would enhance Coinbase’s current derivatives offerings, which currently concentrate on futures trading. Both Coinbase and Deribit have informed regulators in Dubai about the ongoing negotiations. Deribit holds a license in Dubai, which would require approval for transfer to Coinbase in case of a successful deal, sources told Bloomberg. In earlier reports, it was mentioned that the deal could value Deribit between $4 billion and $5 billion. Deribit’s services include options, futures, and spot cryptocurrencies, with total trading volumes reaching about $1.2 trillion last year. The cryptocurrency derivatives market, particularly futures and options, is witnessing a steep rise in the United States. These financial instruments are gaining popularity among retail and institutional investors for hedging and speculative purposes. In its annual report for 2024, Coinbase highlighted a significant surge of approximately 10,950% in derivatives trading volumes. The exchange lists derivatives linked to 92 assets internationally and a smaller selection in the US. Other players in the market, like Robinhood and CME Group, have also been active in offering cryptocurrency futures contracts.
