BITS Pilani, Goa campus, has initiated a study to analyze the impact of microplastics on coral reefs. The research aims to understand how microplastics are affecting the marine ecosystem, particularly coral reefs, in India. The study will focus on the potential harm caused by microplastics to coral reefs and the surrounding biodiversity. Coral reefs are crucial marine ecosystems that support a wide variety of marine life. However, they are facing threats from various sources, including pollution. Microplastics, tiny pieces of plastic less than 5mm in size, are a major concern as they can be ingested by marine organisms, leading to various health issues. The research at BITS Pilani will provide valuable insights into the extent of microplastic pollution in the coastal waters of India and its impact on coral reefs. This study is significant as it will contribute to the growing body of research on marine pollution and help in developing strategies to mitigate the impact of microplastics on coral reefs.
