In a significant development, the Indian government has announced new guidelines for social media platforms and digital news outlets. The new rules aim to regulate digital content and hold these platforms more accountable for the content shared on their websites. Social media giants like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram will now have to adhere to the guidelines issued under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021. These rules require social media companies to appoint a Chief Compliance Officer, a Nodal Contact Person, and a Resident Grievance Officer who must be Indian residents. Additionally, the platforms must remove content within 36 hours of receiving a court order or a government directive. The guidelines also mandate the appointment of a Chief Compliance Officer who will be responsible for ensuring compliance with the rules and regulations. Failure to comply with these guidelines can result in these platforms losing their intermediary status, which provides them immunity from legal action over content posted by users. The move is seen as an attempt by the Indian government to increase transparency and accountability in the digital space. It comes at a time when social media platforms are under increasing scrutiny for their role in spreading misinformation and fake news. These new guidelines are expected to have a significant impact on how social media platforms operate in India and how digital content is regulated in the country.
