Court sets December 24 hearing
A Surat court has issued a bailable warrant against filmmaker Anurag Kashyap after he did not appear in proceedings concerning a complaint over his social-media remarks about the Brahmin community. Reports published on November 3 identify December 24 as the next date for his appearance.
The Indian Express reported that the warrant followed his absence on Monday, November 2. DeshGujarat’s local report independently confirmed the bailable warrant and the December 24 date, citing the advocate who brought the complaint. The case remains pending before the Surat court.
[1][2]Non-appearance follows summons
According to The Indian Express, the court had issued multiple summons, including a public notice in a newspaper. The complainant’s lawyer told PTI that efforts to secure Kashyap’s presence had preceded the latest order.
DeshGujarat likewise reported that the filmmaker had been summoned but had not appeared, leading to the warrant. The new reports describe a procedural step to secure his presence. They do not report a verdict on the underlying allegations, and the warrant described in this update is bailable.
[1][2]Complaint concerns earlier remarks
The dispute concerns posts made in 2025, rather than a new comment by Kashyap this week. The Indian Express traced the controversy to his response to objections surrounding Phule, Ananth Mahadevan’s film about social reformers Jyotiba and Savitribai Phule.
The newspaper also recalled Kashyap’s subsequent public apology for speaking about the Brahmin community in anger. That apology belongs to the earlier controversy; it should not be read as a fresh response to Monday’s court order. The current development is the warrant following non-appearance and the newly reported December hearing date.
