The Indian government has recently announced new guidelines for social media platforms and digital news outlets, aimed at regulating online content and ensuring accountability. These guidelines require social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to set up a grievance redressal mechanism for resolving complaints from users. The platforms are also required to appoint a Chief Compliance Officer, a Nodal Contact Person, and a Resident Grievance Officer who must be residents in India. Additionally, digital news outlets are now required to adhere to the journalistic standards laid down by the Press Council of India and the Cable Television Networks Regulation Act. The guidelines also mandate the appointment of a Grievance Redressal Officer for addressing user complaints. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in the loss of intermediary status for social media platforms, making them liable for criminal action in case of any unlawful content on their platforms. These new guidelines are seen as a step towards ensuring a safer and more transparent online environment in India. The move comes amid concerns over the spread of fake news, misinformation, and hate speech on social media platforms. It is expected that these guidelines will help in curbing the dissemination of harmful content and holding digital platforms accountable for the content shared on their platforms.
