Crypto user convicted in $110 million Mango Markets exploit faces over 6 years in prison, prosecutors urge.

US federal prosecutors are seeking a minimum of six and a half years in prison for Avraham “Avi” Eisenberg, the individual found guilty of orchestrating a $110 million exploit on the decentralized exchange Mango Markets in 2022. The prosecutors are urging US District Judge Arun Subramanian to impose a sentence ranging from 78 to 97 months in prison. Eisenberg was convicted in April 2024 for wire fraud, commodities fraud, and commodities manipulation related to the Mango Markets exploit, along with separate charges of possessing child pornography. The prosecutors argue that such a sentence is necessary to reflect the seriousness of Eisenberg’s crimes, uphold the law, prevent future criminal activities, and safeguard the public. Mango Markets announced the winding down of its operations on January 11, 2025, after launching in August 2021. Eisenberg’s legal team claimed during his trial that he profited $110 million through a legitimate trading strategy on Mango Markets. Following the exploit, Eisenberg returned approximately $67 million but kept over $40 million after a community governance vote. In an impact statement filed on April 22, Mango Markets requested $47 million in restitution to make up for the losses incurred due to Eisenberg’s actions. Despite the challenges in sentencing, including multiple postponements, Eisenberg’s sentencing is expected to take place. Authorities arrested Eisenberg in December 2022, leading to his subsequent conviction. The delays in sentencing dates were attributed to the complexity of the issues involved.
