India’s Direct Tax Collections Exceed Rs 27 Lakh Crore, Surpassing Targets and Indicating Potential Fiscal Improvement

India witnessed a significant increase in gross direct tax collections, soaring by 15.6% to surpass Rs 27 lakh crore in the previous fiscal year. This surge was primarily fueled by rises in income tax and corporation tax payments. The net direct tax collection also performed well, meeting expectations by hitting nearly Rs 22.3 lakh crore, marking a 13.6% increase. The higher tax revenue combined with expenditure savings indicate a possible enhancement in the fiscal deficit as opposed to initial budget forecasts.
