After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Ukraine found itself in possession of a considerable nuclear arsenal. However, due to financial constraints and geopolitical concerns, Ukraine made the strategic decision to disarm itself of these nuclear weapons. The Budapest Memorandum of 1994 assured Ukraine of security assurances in exchange for relinquishing its nuclear stockpile. However, recent events, such as Russia’s annexation of Crimea and its support for separatist movements in Ukraine, have demonstrated the limitations of such international agreements. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine underscores the vulnerabilities faced by Ukraine in the absence of a nuclear deterrent. The issue of Ukraine’s security and sovereignty in the face of Russian aggression continues to be a pressing concern for the international community.
